Last summer I wrote about how shocked I was to receive a huge and unaffordable energy bill increase from British Gas. Up until that point, I’d been paying just £36 a month to my energy supplier but I received a letter to say that my monthly bills would be rising to a whopping £158!
British Gas claimed that the increase was the result of a backlog of overuse. Apparently, I’d been using more energy than I’d been paying for and so they’d increased my bills to cover the extra cost. This happened in August 2018 and I’d been living in the flat since December 2017. I called them to ask why they couldn’t have notified me of my extra usage earlier. Surely it would have made sense to introduce a more gradual increase, rather than springing much bigger bills on me. Unfortunately, the man I spoke to on the phone wasn’t particularly helpful.
So, I decided to switch to a different supplier. I did some research to determine which was likely to be cheapest and I was happy to see Bulb at the top of the price comparison lists. Bulb was a bit of a newcomer to the world of energy suppliers at the time, but I’d heard great things about it. It also had been featured on Money Saving Expert - something I often look for when trying to decide whether a company is legit or not.
How easy was it to switch to Bulb?
I can’t begin to express just how effortless it was to switch to Bulb. People often assume that switching energy suppliers is a longwinded process that requires workers to visit your home and install new pipes. Thankfully, this wasn’t the case.
All I had to do was create a Bulb account online (it took about 5 minutes) and tell them that I wanted to switch to them from British Gas. I then received an email to notify me of my switching date and was told the rest of the switching admin would be taken care of on my behalf.
How do I get a quote for Bulb?
It’s honestly a piece of piss and you can get a Bulb quote in minutes by clicking the button below. I’ve shared screenshots of the process below the button to show how few questions you have to answer. Once you’ve answered the questions, you’ll get an estimate of how much you’ll save and how much you new monthly bills could cost.
Will I have to pay any fees to switch to Bulb?
Nope! If your current supplier charges you any fees when you leave, Bulb will pay these for you.
Is Bulb the cheapest energy supplier for everyone?
Not necessarily. The best tariff for you will depend on multiple factors such as the size of your home, the type of energy you need, and your usage.
However, for the purpose of this post I asked a few friends to type their details into price comparison tools to find out which energy supplier would be best for them. The results showed Bulb either in the very top position or very close to the top. When Bulb didn’t win the top spot, the annual price difference between Bulb’s most suitable tariff and the tariffs from other suppliers was minimal.
Does Bulb have a referral scheme?
Yes! Once you’re a Bulb customer, you’ll get your own referral code and you’ll be able to earn £50 for each friend you refer. Your friend will also earn £50 too. If you get a quote and switch using my link below, you and I will each earn £50 once your switch is complete.
Is Bulb’s energy green?
Yes! Here’s what Bulb has to say about its green energy: “We’re proud to be the UK’s biggest green supplier. We provide our members with 100% renewable electricity from solar, wind and hydro. Plus, our gas is 100% carbon neutral. 10% is green gas produced from renewable sources like food or farm waste. And we offset the rest of the gas we supply by supporting carbon reduction projects around the world.”
This is not a sponsored review and Bulb haven’t paid me to write it. However, if you use my referral link to create your Bulb account, you and I will each earn £50 Bulb credit. If you’d like to save £50 off your energy bills with Bulb, click one of the buttons above or copy and paste this link into your search bar: http://bulb.co.uk/refer/jenniferh9028.
