Can Credit Card Companies Increase My Limit Without My Permission?

July 11, 2018 by

Have you ever had a letter through your door to say that your credit card company was ‘rewarding’ you with an increased credit limit? Although this news may make you feel excited at the thought of all the things you can buy, it’s crucial that you’re able to manage the extra debt responsibly.

After all, one in five people who are struggling with credit card debt say that their card provider raised their limit without their permission, according to a survey from Citizens Advice.

Those struggling with long term credit card debt were the most likely to have their limit increased, a move that runs the risk of plunging them further into debt.

With household expenses and other essential living costs rising much faster than the average wage, it can be far too tempting to make the most of all possible lines of available credit. So whether you’re struggling with your existing debt or you’re managing it well, it’s important to think about the implications of taking on more.

Here I’ve answered some of the most common questions when it comes to unsolicited credit card limit increases. Continue Reading

Monzo Teams Up With IFTTT, Making It Easier For Customers To Automate Their Finances

June 14, 2018 by

Since I created the Money Mess To Financial Success Facebook group in early 2017, my long standing belief that everyone has their own unique way of managing their money has truly been affirmed.

Some people swear by challenger banks such as Monzo and Starling. There are people who love money management apps such as Money Dashboard. You’ve got those obsessed with tracking every purchase in Google Sheets. And then there’s those who love the traditional envelope system to split their income into manageable chunks. Of course, you’ve also got people who are hopeless at managing their money and are either still searching for a method that suits them or they have their head firmly in the sand and don’t yet realise changes need to be made.

Well, today I learnt about a cool new feature offered by Monzo that could inspire thousands to manage their money a little more effectively.

Last week, the challenger bank announced that it had teamed up with If This Then That (IFTTT) to allow customers to connect their account with a number of other platforms from Twitter to Spotify. Continue Reading

Ask Jenni: Having An Affair With My Boss Got Me Promoted But Now He Treats Me Like Dirt

June 7, 2018 by

Hi Jenni

I’m in such a mess. I started seeing my boss in September last year. I’m single but he’s stuck in an unhappy marriage with a woman who sounds like a complete nightmare.

In November he promoted me and I was so happy to finally be in my dream job. I had the freedom to do what I wanted and got a £15,000 pay rise.

I didn’t start this thing to get a promotion. I genuinely fell for him the moment I met him. I loved and cared about him and he said he felt the same way. But after a few months I started to feel really guilty about it all and broke it off. Continue Reading

Ask Jenni: “My Boyfriend’s Lack Of Ambition Is A Huge Turn Off”

April 26, 2018 by

Hi Jenni

I’ve been going out with my boyfriend for almost 4 months and things are going great except for one thing… he’s not ambitious at all! While I’m training to be a solicitor, he’s content working at a supermarket. He doesn’t want anything else from life and no matter how much I try to encourage him to apply for better jobs, he’s not interested. He says he just wants to go to work every day and come home and forget all about it. Continue Reading

Exactly How Much It Cost Me To Furnish My Home As A First Time Buyer

exactly how much it cost me to furnish my home as a first time buyer

It’s been just over four months since I picked up the keys for my flat. Since that joyous day, I’ve been really busy trying to furnish the place. I’d still like to add some finishing touches such as curtains and bar stools, but due to other financial commitments, I’ve had to put some these big home purchases on hold for now.

Filling the place has been wayyyy more expensive than I initially anticipated, although I must admit I’ve spent quite a lot of money on non-essentials. For the sake of transparency, I thought I’d share a breakdown of how much it’s cost me to furnish my home as a first time buyer. Continue Reading

Should You Use A Mortgage Broker Or Go Straight To Your Bank?

March 1, 2018 by

I’m often asked whether it’s best to use a mortgage broker or go straight to your own bank when you start looking at buying a house.

Spoiler alert: My answer is pretty much always… get in touch with a mortgage broker. By all means, if you want to contact your bank to see what they have to offer, you do that, but accepting the first thing they offer you and ending your mortgage search there could see you missing out on more suitable deals or, in a worst case scenario, risking rejection.

Here are just a few reasons why. Continue Reading

Should We Be Investing In Our Twenties?

February 18, 2018 by

Let’s be honest. Managing your money in your twenties can be a real pain in the bum. Whether you want to travel the world, buy your own home, set up your own business or start a family, it can be really hard to juggle day-to-day essential living costs with life’s big milestones. So when financial experts tell us that we should be investing in our twenties, it can be hard not to laugh in their faces before crying into a glass of cheap supermarket wine for the third time in a week. Even When You Buy Your First Home, There’s A Chance You’re Still Being Screwed Over

February 3, 2018 by

Buying my own place has taught me a lot of things. It’s taught me the importance of keeping paperwork organised, it’s taught me that housework and chores are never ending, and it’s taught me that I’m far less independent than I once thought.

Perhaps most devastatingly, it’s taught me that, despite spending years living the life of a recluse and saving for a deposit on my own place in a bid to invest in my own future rather than pay off a landlord’s mortgage, I’m still going to be paying a sum of money to a bunch of wealthy property tycoons each month.

I say this because I’ve bought a leasehold property.

Let me explain… Continue Reading

me&mymoney: How This Money Management App Is Helping Me Work Towards My Financial Goals

January 9, 2018 by

Whether I’m dancing around the kitchen while cooking my dinner or walking around my apartment butt naked, becoming a homeowner has changed my life in a number of magical ways. Frustratingly, homeownership has obviously brought with it a series of challenges too. Mostly, financial ones.

Before I bought my own place, I was fortunate enough to live with my parents and pay very little in terms of living costs. The vast majority of my income was squirrelled away into savings accounts in preparation for my home purchase. Now though, it seems like not a day goes by without having some type of bill pushed through the door and my bank balance is being stretched to its absolute limits. Continue Reading
