It all began in 2014…
I had recently graduated from university and was earning a little more than minimum wage in my first full time job.
I was renting a flat with two friends, but my room was mouldy and a leak from the flat above caused a gigantic hole in the bathroom ceiling that went unfixed for months.
I was living pay cheque to pay cheque, I had no savings, and any disposable income I did have was spent on nights out, takeaways and clothes.

I knew that if I didn’t get my act together, I’d be living pay cheque to pay cheque forever and would never be able to buy my own home.
Determined to break the cycle, I began tracking my expenses to see exactly where my money was going each month.
I started reading as many money blogs and personal finance books as I could find. I slashed my outgoings. I job hopped from company to company to increase my income. I started freelancing on the side of my day job.
I officially became a homeowner in December 2017 - buying a two-bed new build apartment in south Manchester.
Becoming a homeowner has been amazing so far! I can wander around in my pants, sing at the top of my lungs, and decorate the place however I wish.
Living alone isn’t just about the fun stuff though. I’ve started overpaying my mortgage, saving for retirement, and growing my emergency fund so I can become as independent as possible.

In August 2019, I was made redundant from my job in digital marketing.
But with an emergency fund at my side, I decided to use this as an opportunity to become self-employed.
I now juggle several different roles - personal finance blogger, copywriter, journalist, content strategist and social media manager.
