October was my best month yet in terms of income but this month I’ve done even better and have earned almost £3,000. I can’t quite believe this is real.
Before you continue, please note that this income is pre-tax and I’m likely to get shafted by HMRC when it comes time to submit my tax return. My lodger income is tax-free thanks to the government’s Rent a Room scheme.
FREELANCE WRITING/EDITING – £324
I recently wrote about my new freelance job as Finance Editor of Modern Go-Getter, a soon-to-be launched website designed for ambitious young people. This month £324 landed in my bank account for Modern Go-Getter work I’d completed. I’m paid £18 an hour and it’s great to finally be getting paid to write, without having to spend ages pitching to various publications.
At the moment, me and the rest of the The Modern Go-Getter team are creating a bunch of content so that when the website goes live, there’s plenty for readers to sink their teeth into.
CAN’T SWING A CAT – £1,079
Ho-lee-shit! This has been my best month for Can’t Swing a Cat income ever! I’ve always struggled to make an income from this website, so this has been a really rewarding and reassuring month.
I made this money by including affiliate links on my website and within my Instagram bio. Most of this money came from promoting investing platform Trading 212 (£745) but I also made some money from recommending matched betting platform Profit Accumulator (£334) to people looking to make some tax-free income from home.
Every time someone creates a Trading 212 Invest account and deposits £1 after using one of my affiliate links, we each receive a free share. Some of the free shares I’ve received have been worth as little as £7 but others have been worth up to £80. Every time I get a free share, I get a little notification on my phone telling me how much it’s worth. Imagine how delighted I was when I was stacking shelves at the supermarket one evening and my phone let me know I’d earned a £70 AstraZeneca share without having to think about it. Passive income, baby!
It’s taken a long time and a lot of work to get to a stage where I can make passive income from this website, but I’m hoping the success from this month will continue.
SUPERMARKET – £857
I did a decent amount of overtime leading up to this month’s payday and received £857 for it. Supermarket pay is obviously pretty low but I’m grateful that it gives me the opportunity to get out of the house and spend time with my work pals. When I first became self-employed in 2019 and was working from home all the time, I found it hard to adjust to spending so much time alone. I’m sure I’d find it even more challenging if I was still in that situation during a pandemic.
RENTING OUT MY SPARE ROOM TO A LODGER – £550
One of the reasons I’ve been doing so much supermarket overtime this year is that things haven’t been going so well at home. When my lodger first moved in, my plan was to spend less time at the shop and more time on my freelance writing career. Things unfortunately didn’t turn out as I’d hoped. We dislike each other so much that I keep signing up for overtime just so I can keep out of her way.
Our relationship has been getting increasingly hostile as time’s gone on so at the start of the month I gave her 3-months’ notice to leave. I didn’t have to give her so much notice but I wanted to do the right thing and make it easier for her to find a new place to live, but in the days that followed, things got even worse and I was so tired of being repeatedly disrespected that I was on the brink of losing my temper with her.
I reduced her notice to one-month and she stopped talking to me completely. Reducing her notice wasn’t a decision I took lightly but I’m convinced most people would have done the same thing if they had to live with her. She’ll be gone in December.
