With the number of people infected with Coronavirus rising to 100,000 and the number of deaths reaching 4,000, the World Health Organisation has officially declared the virus a pandemic.
While everyone’s number one priority should be keeping safe and doing everything possible to prevent loss of life, it’s only natural for people to worry about how the coronavirus will impact the economy and their ability to make money.
Matched betting has become increasingly popular in recent years, with some turning what initially started out as a hobby or side hustle into a full-time job with the potential to bring in a greater income than the UK’s average salary.
But is now a good time to get into matched betting? According to H2 Gambling Capital, data specialists for the gambling industry, global gambling revenues will be hard hit by sporting event cancellations in response to the coronavirus outbreak.
This begs the question, if sporting events are cancelled across the globe, what does this mean for gambling and, more specifically matched betting?

Which countries have banned sporting events because of COVID-19?
So far, China and Italy have been the hardest hit by COVID-19, with both countries going into lockdown and forcing people to self-quarantine at home, regardless of whether they’ve been diagnosed with the illness or not. As you can imagine, this has meant that almost all sporting events have been cancelled in those nations.
The World Figure Skating Championships, scheduled to begin next week in Montreal, Canada, have been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.
In Switzerland, the Swiss Football League is suspended completely until 23 March, after the Swiss government issued a ban on all events involving more than 1,000 attendees.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games may be postponed from the summer until later in the year.

Can I still bet on UK sporting events?
Of course! At the time of writing, most sporting events in the UK are going ahead and as long as they’re taking place, there’s nothing to stop you betting on them.
Some events have been modified slightly, with football teams playing in empty stadiums. But some matches have been postponed, such as Manchester City’s Premier League match with Arsenal on 11th March.
The Cheltenham Festival is currently underway, with many matched bettors making hundreds through horse racing matched bets already.
Should I start matched betting following the coronavirus outbreak?
It might be worth making the most of matched betting while you still can. I know I will be!
At the time of writing, the biggest matched betting tutorial platform, Profit Accumulator, is offering annual membership for £140 via this link. This works out at just £11.67 a month aka a saving of £75 a year. Personally, despite the great saving, I’d be reluctant to sign up for annual membership at this moment in time due to the uncertainties surrounding coronavirus and the impact this could have on sporting events.
However, with monthly membership costing £17.99, I don’t think there’s any harm in signing up for that now [make sure you make the most of the free trial first] and seeing how you get on. Plenty of events are still underway and there’s more than enough sport taking place to work your way through the abundance of free bets offered by Profit Accumulator.
You can easily make that £17.99 back after placing a couple of matched bets. If a month from now sporting events have taken a bigger hit, you can cancel your Profit Accumulator membership. If you’ve followed the tutorials correctly and have placed the matched bets as directed, you’ll have made money!
I made £156 in my first 7 days of matched betting, as explained in my 7 days of matched betting blog post.
If you’ve been thinking of giving matched betting a try anyway, I think there’s no time like the present because a couple of months from now there may be fewer betting opportunities available to choose from.
You can make £40+ from Profit Accumulator’s free trial alone
Profit Accumulator offers a free trial to new members which allows you to make £40+ from just a couple of bets.
You’ll gain access to a series of videos which talk you through the matched betting process step-by-step. It was so easy to do that even I understood it, despite being a newbie to betting.
