Could Your Dog Become A Superhero?

October 24, 2015 by

Whether it’s via letters in the post or adverts on the telly, we’re often being asked to give blood to save the lives of other people. But did you know that we humans aren’t the only ones who can donate? Dogs can give blood too!

Last year more than 1000 dogs needed blood transfusions in the UK. As a result, Pet Blood Bank UK, the charity which provides the country’s canine blood bank service, has started a campaign to recruit new dog donors across the country.

In order to be a doggy donor, our furry friends need to be:

  • Fit and healthy
  • Between one and eight years old
  • Weigh more than 25kg
  • Have a good temperament
  • Have never travelled abroad
  • Vaccinated
  • Not on any medication

I’d love for my dog Molly to become a donor but since she’s a cross between a small King Charles Cavalier and a Toy Poodle, I don’t think she’ll be heavy enough even when she’s fully grown. I don’t think I’ve blogged about Molly before, but if you follow Can’t Swing a Cat on Twitter or Instagram, chances are you’ve already been inundated with photos of the little pup. You might have also seen my post about looking for a dog.

I can understand why some dog owners may be reluctant to let their pets donate. After all, it’s not like animals can make the decision themselves. But ask yourself this: If your pet was ill and in need of a blood transfusion, would you accept another dog’s blood? If so, I really think it’s worth considering dog blood donation.

Molly may not be able to give blood herself, but if this blog post and her cute little face can inspire just a handful of fellow dog owners to help their pooches become superheroes, I think Molly will have done her bit 🙂 .

To find out more about dog blood donation, visit Pet Blood Bank on Twitter or give them a call on 01509 232 222.

Whether you dog’s already a lifesaver, your pooch has received a blood transfusion, or you’re thinking of signing up, let me know in the comments below!
